Preliminary reports from emergency officials at the scene of the tragic crash along Van Reenen's Pass indicate that 18 people have been killed, 13 adults and 5 children. The accident occurred on the evening of January 6, 2025, when a truck, a taxi, and a light motor vehicle were involved in a collision. Emergency services responded quickly, but unfortunately, the death toll is confirmed to be this high.
The cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage, and an investigation is underway to determine what led to the devastating incident. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as the scene remains active with emergency response teams working to clear the wreckage.
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) has issued a statement confirming that all traffic is being stacked between the Pyrimas Motel and Van Reenen Town while emergency services attend to the scene. "All lanes are currently closed on Van Reenen's Pass," the statement reads, advising motorists to expect significant delays.

Update: A search is underway for a Zimbabwean truck driver who reportedly fled the scene after a horror accident that claimed the lives of 18 people.
The driver of the truck who reportedly fled the scene, has been identified as 37-year-old Mr N Mbedezi from Zimbabwe.
KwaZulu-Natal transport department spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya said: “There have been conflicting reports on the whereabouts and the details of the truck driver.
“We wish to report that according to our investigation, the truck driver is a foreign national, Mr N Mbedezi, a 37-year-old from Zimbabwe.
“At the time of the collision, it was raining heavily, it was dark and very misty.
“The truck belongs to Pangolin Logistics.”
The provincial Transport Department says the victims of the crash were travelers from the Eastern Cape.
